Floppy Disk Drive (FDD) is a device that uses a certain type of CD-ROM as a storage device called Disk.
Flexibility. It was invented in the year 1967 by “IBM” company and it was of a relatively large size (8 inches), making it “IBM”
It develops after a period of time to become (5.25 inches) and carries (360 kilobytes) of information compared to (1.44 megabytes) GTA
Our current tablets are (3.5 inches) in size, which have proven their strength and eliminated discs with (2.55) inches at the beginning

Types of floppy disk Drive :

2 – 5.3-inch floppy disks, which are the most popular and have a storage capacity from 720 KB to 441 MB1 to MB2.88.
3- 8-inch floppy disks, which are very rare.
A floppy disk is like a tape recorder in many things, including:

  • Both record information.
The ability to delete information and reuse it several times.
    Low price.
    Ease of use.

Floppy disk structure:

  • The floppy disk consists of a circular piece of flexible plastic covered with a magnetic material and then coated with a cover Tiki Tiki
  • Solid (outer shell).
  • At the top of the floppy disk, there is a movable metal cap that detects the circular plastic part.
  • Inside the disc, which spins at a rate of 360 rev/min while he is in his job It is also found in any one of you
  • A small opening that can be closed to prevent writing to it.

Floppy drive components:

1- Reading and Writing Head:
There are two heads to complete the writing, reading and scanning process, one for writing and reading and the other for scanning the data on
Disk, so that it can be reused again.
2- Floppy drive:
There is a drive installed in the middle of the disk that spins at a speed of 600 rpm to help read data and
Move to the appropriate file at an appropriate speed.

3- Precision motor:
This engine is used to move the heads that are written and erased to the location of the file intended to be overwritten or erased.
4- Electronic Board:
It contains electronic parts that control the movement of heads and other matters.

The process of reading and writing data:

1- The computer sends an order to the floppy drive by reading or writing a file on the floppy disk driver.
2- The engine starts to rotate and turns the piece of data stored on the floppy disk drive.
3- The fine motor starts to rotate to move the heads to the place of reading or writing.
4- The heads stop in the mentioned place and make sure that it is the right place before starting the required process (reading or writing).
5- When writing there is a file whose function is to erase everything that is in the section that the writing head will write on and it is intended
The file is not a program file but rather a piece that is larger than the head itself to avoid any effect during the writing process on the disk.
6- When reading, the reading head takes its place and starts reading magnetic spreads on the disk and sends its contents to be translated into the user.

Facts about floppy disk drive:

  • The presence of two floppy disks sticking together does not affect their data contents, due to the small influence of the magnetic content on them.
  • There is a slot at the end of the floppy disk when covered, no one will be able to write to the disk until the cover is removed.

Floppy disk features

1- relatively cheap.
2- Its small size and low weight make it easy to carry it anywhere.
3- Ability to protect data from copies.
4- The data protection force is very large and it is difficult to break it.
5- Ability to save data from writing to it or delete it by mistake.

Floppy disk defects
1- Ease and speed of damage.
2- Reduced storage capacity compared to hard and optical drives.

How to keep a floppy disk drive:

1 – Do not expose the floppy disks to any liquids.
2- Do not bend the discs because bending them leads to damage to the magnetic disk and the loss of the data recorded on it.
3- Not pressing or placing heavy objects on the tablets.
4- Do not expose the tablet to a very high or low temperature.
5- The floppy disks must be inserted into the floppy drive easily and gently in order to protect them and the operator as well.
6- Not exposing the tablets to dust and smoke by putting them in their covers after use.
7- Do not touch the part of the magnetic surface directly with the hand.
8- Not storing storage discs on electromagnetic devices such as TVs or mobile devices.
9 – Do not expose the tablets to sunlight directly.
10 – Working to clean the floppy disk drive periodically from the dust and fine particles that may fall on it.
